Question about 67 SWB frame
4 Attachment(s)
I bought this 67 about two years ago and am just now working on it. I noticed a number stamped on the frame that clearly appears to have a 1979 date. This stamp is located on the side of the frame right under the driver’s door. Does anybody recognize this type of stamp in this area? I’m not familiar with square body frames so could the truck have been framed swapped years ago with a 1979 frame?
Both of my 72’s have the VIN stamped on the frame of the driver’s side near the steering box. Did 67’s have the VIN stamped there as well? Mine has nothing stamped in that location. My VIN number on door jam plate and SPID match each other and the truck’s options match the SPID. However the VIN plate does not have rosette rivets. Did 67 models use those? Just curious. Thanks for all input! |
Re: Question about 67 SWB frame
part number for frame rail
some did some didn't has been my experience yes they did have rosette rivets |
Re: Question about 67 SWB frame
Yep my 67 has no vin frame stampings either. But It does have numbers like your pictures on the side of the frame too. That's a nice little truck. It's possible someone painted it and removed the plate although it looks pretty original.

Re: Question about 67 SWB frame
I'm also curious about frame documentation. I was able to find this information although it doesn't prove anything it may help you feel better about your frame.
GM Parts Wiki has a listing for 3887701 in the Parts History Catalog P&A 30H January 1973 http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=68721 http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=68913 3887701 USE 03913179 11-67 Part number 3887701 was substituted by 3913179 in Nov of 1967 Check out these threads https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=219669 https://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vbo...d.php?t=810797 so 10-7-79 is some type of manufacturing code and not a date Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in |

Going further down the rabbit hole
http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=68721 3887701 USE 03913179 11-67 3887702 USE 03913180 04-67 http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=68743 3913179 USE 03935801 03-68 3913180 USE 03935802 03-68 http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=221072 3935801 68-70 Ser. 10 W/115 WB (exc. 4/WD leaf spring) Left 3935802 68-70 Ser. 10 W/115 WB (exc. 4/WD leaf spring) Right So it looks like part number 3887701 is for a 1967 C10, short bed, coil spring, driver's side (Left) frame rail. |
Re: Question about 67 SWB frame
Thanks for the responses and this information, cbeerman. It has been very helpful. I guess the number on my frame that looks like a date on my frame is actually some other part number of sorts.

Adding some questionably helpful into here? I just got to stripping the frame of my ‘67 GMC 2WD short fleet and have these markings I came across.
DRIVERS 3914401-310 3-30-110 PASSENGERS 3914402-310 4-4-110 VIN tag has rosette rivets, has CS1570D on the VIN tag, CS1570-120 on the cowl, CS1570 on the inside of the drivers frame rail…..then a bunch of 507, 495, 1116 markings on the firewall. No idea what these mean. There is also something cryptic on the inside of the drivers frame rail. No VIN stamp on the frame anywhere unfortunately - causing me a hang of a time with the local regulators on having a VIN verification done. They’re adamant they need to see the VIN in 2 spots. All I have is the door. No SPID, no frame stamp like my ‘68 proudly shows. I hope something is helpful here?? |

I can't say if your local motor vehicle bureaucracy would buy it, if you had a fresh SPID printed and mounted on the glove box lid. But there are artisans who can print fresh SPIDs. That would be your two forms of ID. |
Re: Question about 67 SWB frame
Here is a link to Jeff at Out in the Shop. He can reproduce a SPID if you need it

Re: Question about 67 SWB frame
The ID is stamped in several places on your truck. If these sharpers are so smart, they know where those places are and can check them. Pretty sure there's one on the firewall at the heater box. Law enforcement has the particulars, for obvious reasons.

New cars are stamped on damn near every panel. I took my ‘68 apart down to every last nut & bolt, and the only location was the door jamb and 2x on the drivers frame rail. SPID had been removed and there was no seat. |

Re: Question about 67 SWB frame
When I had my 1970 Blazer completely disassembled, I only found 5 locations on the whole truck with either full VINS or partial VINS.
They are as follows: Main stainless steel VIN tag - Full VIN stamped LH Door Safety standards declaration decal - Full VIN printed Glovebox SPID decal - Full VIN printed LH frame rail near steering gearbox and PS pump on top surface- Partial VIN stamped LH frame rail top surface in the vicinity of where the drivers seat would be located - Partial VIN stamped My Blazer was manufactured at the St. Louis plant. Example of the partial VIN: 0S123456 0-Last digit of the year 1970 S- St. Louis assembly plant 123456 - VIN sequential number. Must match last six digits of VIN on tag on door jamb! |
Re: Question about 67 SWB frame
Chalk markings is all I have ever seen other than the frame rail stamps and the VIN tag..
