Per the engineers I used to work with you need at least the diameter of the stud worth of thread/nut engagement. Don't use the one fits all spacers. Get the billet type made for your bolt diameter and bolt circle.

You will lose about 4-5 threads of engagement if you have 1/2'' studs so check that with whatever rims you have

I purchased some for my 70 C10, just for the rear, from US Wheel Adapters. Gave them measurements of the wheel hub and axle (Moser, not stock) for a true hub-centric spacer. Here's a link:
