Fuel Filter in Rochester 2-BBL?

EDIT - I've finally found a proper diagram for the carb, and it appears that there should indeed be a fuel filter installed behind the inlet nut. I see that NAPA has a metal one (3050) and a paper one (3044) listed as options. The instructions in the service manual are as follows, and now I'm confused in a different way:

○ Disconnect fuel line connection at fuel filter nut
○ Remove inlet fuel filter nut with 1" box wrench
○ Remove filter element and spring
○ Check bronze element by blowing on cone end
○ Check paper element by blowing on fuel inlet end
○ Install element spring, then element. Bronze filters must have small section of cone facing out.
○ Install new gasket on inlet fitting nut, then install nut and tighten
○ Install fuel line and tighten

So....how do I know which element to buy - the paper or the bronze one?

Hi guys,

Probably a stupid question, but I've never been afraid of those.... I see a fuel filter referenced in the service manual that should be changed annually. I can't discern from the manual if that's only in the Holley carbs or if it's in all of them. My 69 C-20 has a 307 with the Rochester 2 BBL carb. Everything is bone stock. If it has one, could anyone point me to a place to get the proper part number for it?

Thanks!

Wes

You can use either one. I have used both. There are two sizes, a long one and a short one so take yours with you if you get a new one. If it has a bronze one I just spray them with carb cleaner and blow them out from both ends with an air hose. Hang on to it tight because the air can blow it right out of your hand. Also be sure and wear safety glasses because it will blow the carb cleaner in all directions.....

I have used both types over the years. Some time after a carb rebuild by a mechanic, I wrongly assumed the filter had been replaced. It had a paper filter at the time, and eventually deteriorated (possibly due to modern gas) and partially blocked fuel flow. The truck would idle and drive down the road okay, but couldn't pump enough fuel to pull a hill without dying. I replaced the filter with a sintered bronze one and all was good again. I will never buy another paper filter.
