1971 C10 2WD rear brake hard lines
Just out of curiosity, I am wondering if LMC gave me the wrong rear hard lines and wanted to tap into the knowledge of the forum for info. I ordered the pre-bent SS hard line set and new hoses. The order was correct for my 1971 C10 2WD 350 with rear coils. The only hitch is that it used to be a long bed but the frame was cut and it has a short bed now. I spent the holiday under the truck installing the new lines and made it all the way to the rear hardlines. Everything else fit perfectly. The two separate lines that run from the T at the end of the hose to the wheel cylinders were off. Firstly, they did not fit into the T, I had to buy an adapter nut (3/8 female to 7/16 male). That made the connections. The lines themselves seem too short as if they were made for the T to be on the top of the axle or otherwise not so far rotated to the front of the truck. It was TIGHT. But I was tired at that point and just made them fit. I called LMC but they had no clue what I was talking about and don't have the actual fitting information in front of them to help diagnose the issue. So, a couple of questions. One, does the long bed to short bed change cause me a problem somehow? I'm guessing not since the long line that runs in the frame rail down the passenger side fit just fine, and the hose was perfect. Two, did the 67-70's have the T fixed in a different location? A location where the hardlines would be a bit shorter than a 71?

Rear axle brake lines changed a few times in the 67-72 generation. Working with my 1970 Blazer, then converting to 1972 Blazer style lines, which are totally different yet. The T connection on a 1970 is on the passengers side rearward axle tube using a spot welded bracket. 1972 had a bolt on bracketry on the top of the differential housing.

I'll take some pics, LOL. If I were to kneel on the passenger side of the rear axle and look toward the driver's side; looking right down the rear axle like a gun barrel, the T is attached to a welded bracket with a bolt at about 2:00 or 2:30. So it is not on top, but rotated around the axle tube toward the front of the truck by 50 - 60 degrees.

I went out to the garage in my nice clothes (wife and I went out for dinner) and got yelled at. So the pic will have to wait until tomorrow, or I need to change into my brake fluid and grease soaked (mixed with blood, sweat, and tears...) clothes from earlier. But, HO455's pics are exactly what mine looks like. Except for the fact that I could only engage about three threads of the bolt that holds the T into place because the hard lines are so short that it prevents the T from seating. Other than that it is the same; rotated quite a bit forward (to the front of the truck) than Rust's photo (which looks to be squarely on top of the axle tube). So, I think I am answering my own question. I am guessing LMC sent me the wrong hard lines in their "kit" (along with MC to proportioning valve lines that wouldn't make up). Oh well, I'll get it fixed. Thanks for the excellent pics folks!

I know that 12 bolt A-body axles have the tee in the middle of the pumpkin at the top. And as stupid as it sounds I'd bet someone probably made the decision that all 12 bolts are the same, so there's no need for 2 different parts.
Rust's shows the difference between 70 and 71 hoses and there mounting. |
