Trouble with Moog Dust Boot

1 Attachment(s)
I am hoping someone can help with installing the dust boot on a Moog lower ball joint. I have replaced the ball joint and trying to get the boot to go all the way over the ball joint and seat on the control arm. I can't seem to get it to go all the way on and stay on. Here is what I have done so far.
1. Used a 2" pipe to hammer it on
2. Went o Moog site and they recommended using two channel lock pliers to work two sides down at a time. Didn't work.
3. WD 40 on inside of boot and ball joint
4. Grease on inside of boot and ball joint.
5. Warmed just the boot in front of heater then used pipe. (my garage isn't heated and it has been cold in MD)
6. Use a flat chisel and a punch and a hammer, but started to damage the lip of the boot.
7. Heated the entire control arm/ball joint and boot and used pipe and hammer.
8. Heated everything, used a clamp, pulled it down snug, left over night, pulled clamp and slid back up.

Here is a picture of my latest attempt. It is seated with the clamp on, but as soon as the pressure if released, it slides about an 1/8th inch up.

Any suggestions or something I am missing? I don't want to rely on the spindle putting enough pressure to hold it down. The last thing I want to do is torque the spindle and then have to take it apart because the dust boot is not seated.

Try cleaning all of the oil/grease off both pieces. Use a wet adhesive for the
" lubricant " like 3m super 77 or similar. Apply it with an acid brush so it's not all over the place. And clamp into place overnight.

I may give that a try.

I called Moog and I have the right part number for the boot and ball joint.

I might also bring them in the house and let them warm for a couple days and try again.

Re: Trouble with Moog Dust Boot

I brought the control arms in the house and had them in front of my wood stove to make sure everything had a chance to warm up but not get hot. I tried the routine I have in the picture and let them cool overnight when the stove died down. Didn't work.
I then tried the adhesive/permatex and put back in front of stove and clamped down. Didn't work.
So at this point, they are going back on the truck. I won't have the truck on the road till at least spring if not summer. So everything will have time to warm up and I will have the spindle pressing the boot down. I will then try the channel locks and see if I get any better fit. At this point, not sure what else I can do.

It may be time to go to the auto parts store near you and get the next best brand of lower ball joint and try to install it.

I had trouble with Moog boots on my '77 Silverado. I just shoved them on, made sure they always had grease, and hoped for the best. Daily drove it for 9 years even through Canadian winters before I sold it, with zero problems at all.

I did have a pair of Energy Suspension boots, but never got around to installing them.
