Anyone Have 8.5" Wide Wheels with Stepside
I really hate to make another wheel thread. I spent hours reading wheel and Static Drop threads. I have narrowed down my plan to a 3.5/5 Static Drop and I really prefer the Look of 17" Wheels. I found a set of wheels that I do like that are 17X8.5 I can get these with a 4.75 Back Spacing. I can play with Spacers if need be a little, But Wondering if I can fit an 8.5" wheel all around (Specifically in the front). I dont believe the Back is an issue. I do Have the Narrow Rear Axle so I will likely incorporate a spacer back there already.
Optionally I can get a 17X8 with 5.5 Back Spacing. But Iam thinking that would require Larger spacers All around. I havent picked out tires yet, but I am leaning towards a 28" Diameter. I dont mind keeping all 4 Tires the Same Width and Height. Does anyone run a similar setup on a stepside? Ive seen alot of 8" Wide Wheels. Possibly someone has an 8.5" width up front in a 17" or maybe even a 20" wheel? Thanks. |

When I bought my stepside '68, it had 18x8 rims on it with 5" backspacing. The tires were 255/55/18. The insides of the tires rubbed on the bed sides when cornering, and that was even with a wider 1970-up rear end.

As low as my truck is in the front I should have ordered 245/50/19, it just barely touches a fender bolt when turning if I hit a bump. Rears clear perfectly though. Its a 67 (narrow) 12 bolt with a 5 lug swap for the CPP big brake kit. 4.5 backspace is perfect, 4.75 would be cutting it a little close with a narrow rear. |

20x8.5 - 255/45r20 Narrow rear, 4.75" BS.
At the time it was around 5" rear static drop. I know people put bigger tires under the stepsides but just saying for me, I like to keep the wheel tucked under the fender a little bit. This was measured with a Wheelrite, and I had an adjustable track bar. It's about as tight as I'd want to go on a stepside. |
Re: Anyone Have 8.5" Wide Wheels with Stepside
I have 17x8 with 4.5 backspace in the front and 17x9 with 5 backspace in the rear. In both cases, that is zero offset. meaning the wheel mounting surface is in the very center of the rim. (On an 8 rim that is measured between the beads, so overall width of an 8 inch rim is 9 and on a 9 rim it is 10 inches so a 5 bs is zero offset).
In the rear the width of the tire matters and the rear axle. My truck is a 69 with a 71-72 5 lug axle swapped in which is 3/4 inch wider on each side. Otherwise the 9 rim in the rear wouldnt work. FWIW, my truck is leaf spring and axle flipped for 7 drop. |
