How to get knobs off heater control panel for 1968 Chevy C10?

I purchased a new heater control panel for my 1968 Chevy C10 and it has black knobs. I would like to replace them with chrome knobs like my factory panel has.

How do you take those knobs off?

I tried taking my old knobs off my factory panel just to get some practice and see how they are removed but they are not coming off even when using a set of pliers.

I had to really hank em off hard using a pair of pliers and even then, I broke one of them. They are on there super tight.

Carefully move it knob back and forth, while you pul out.
BUT, you have to be VERY CAREFUL not to break the end of the levers off (done it :smoke:).
Then put the new ones on with a dab of epoxy glue
Good luck:metal:

I did try that but they did not move even a little so I stopped as I didnt want to break my new heater control panel. Thanks for the reply!

I don't think the knobs are meant to be removed from the levers. If you look at repro levers, they have knobs (sorry if that sounds odd (don't say knob!)).

The levers are zinc and brittle (after 50 years). Actually they were breaking in the 70s but who's counting.

But you cannot install new levers into your old control panel unless you remove the knobs off your old levers so you can remove them.

I was going to say, you can buy replacement ones so they do come off.
After breaking one. I made a little hook tool to get behind them with a good straight yank.

Lmc sells knobs and replacement levers and the push on fasteners

But if you cannot get the knobs off the old levers to remove them then you cannot install the new levers unless you just break the old knobs and levers but I am not wanting to break them.

Anyways I gave up and just installed the control panel as is so I didnt break anything on it.

Thanks for the input!

That’s the best move, and stays original. Definitely sucks breaking them off. And trust me, they break easy:smoke:

I've slipped the knobs through the plastic bezel by carefully spreading the bezel.
