Prices of parts.
Let me start by saying this is NOT political, as I’m genuinely concerned.
With all the talk of the Tariffs, and the effect on prices on auto parts, how will this effect replacement parts? We all know, that unless you have a secret source for NOS parts, most everything we buy for our trucks is made overseas. Before the weekend, I am ordering ALL the parts I need to finish my truck. I’ve been planning it for quite some time, and this is just a motivator to finally get the parts needed. I truly feel for the vendors who are going to have a tough time, with pricing adjustments. |

Good move, getting the parts now.
Pricing will go up on the existing inventory because they can. Our hobby is expensive, tariffs do not help. My prediction is; Pricing will not likely go down when the tariffs go off. 15 years ago I could purchase Auto transmission fluid, at Costco, for a dollar. The price of crude was almost $120 a barrel. The last quart of ATF I purchased at the auto parts store was $8.50. Today, the price of crude is $68. Go figure. |
Re: Prices of parts.
To be fair ATF isn’t just made from base oil . It contains a multitude of additives . Valvoline DexIII/merc is $20 bucks a gallon at Walmart . Wouldn’t pay 8 bucks a quart unless I was on the road and it was an emergency . Are you talking Dextron or CVT fluid ? I know my Dodge takes atf+4 is around 7 but it’s a special type .
Even with normal inflation something you bought 15 years ago will be more expensive today but not 8x as expensive . But you are correct prices don’t normally go down after a spike to their previous price. |
Re: Prices of parts.
I was getting off topic, my apologies for that.
The Oil was Dextron III at OReillys. |

Re: Prices of parts.
I help at a body shop a couple days a week. Tariffs have been the topic of discussion in regards to all parts to repair a vehicle. The parts manufacturer is not going eat the increase costs. And the insurance company's are not going to eat the increase cost of parts. They are going to increase premium prices to cover the increase of repair parts.

Re: Prices of parts.
It's not so much that things cost more as much as the dollar has been greatly devalued. All fiat money runs down to zero.
Trade your dollars for hard assets (parts are good)! |
Re: Prices of parts.
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
According to reports if the company manufactures outside the US, tariffs will apply (rightly so), if they make it here (Even if it’s a foreign owned company), the tariffs will not be assessed. Auto Corporations know this new that’s why they produce vehicles here, It appears that the fear mongers are taking advantage of the situation. Reputable companies will not take advantage with price gouging, but some will. In the end Companies will do what they feel is necessary to continue to operate. We all need to continue to support our trusted sources I agree with bringing manufacturing back to our country. Quality will improve along with customer satisfaction/service. BTW, I kinda used this to get the wife to agree to me ordering ALL the parts to finish my truck (finally), and she actually agreed.:smoke: So no, all my parts will be here by the end of next week:metal: This is turning out to be a great year:chevy: |
Re: Prices of parts.
In reality Companys overseas would not bring their products production back here in any hurry, would most likely take a decade. Or even new companys starting in the US. It would take more than a 10 or 25% tarriff. If more parts are made here expect to pay alot more $$ for the costs to make stuff here. especially if there are no migrants to fill the low paying jobs. Don't expect top quality eather I've see many reviews of parts made here tha are made cheaply to stay competitive.

Re: Prices of parts.
I hope to get my truck finished this summer. it's been four long years since I started it. I had most of the major parts bought before I tore the truck down. Engine, trans and all sheet metal along with seals, windows and trim items except body side molding. If I had to buy everything today it would cost at least 5k more. I am already over 30K I hope 2 more will do it.
