moving to alaska

Hello all, Been down for a while but ok now.
Retirement is here and I'm going back to Alaska. I will be towing my Black 72 with a U-Haul the mid of April heading west and taking a right in Billings to get through Canada.

Should be an interesting trip.
Hope you don’t get hung up in paperwork coming across the border.

Re: moving to alaska

I used to drive back and forth between NJ and Juneau (via Skagway) when I was at the University in the early 90s. August was the best time for safe travels with plenty of vehicles around plus open businesses for fuel and food.

January was the prettiest time to drive but required lots of advanced planning to ensure fuel, food and lodging were available. First time I drove in winter my car froze solid in Fort St John. The local boys thought I was stupid for not plugging-in and then didn't believe me when I told them there was no plug. They had never seen a vehicle without one.

What town you headed to?

Thanks all,
Been doing paperwork for two months and still not clear on it. (guns).
I am challenged about doing pictures but will try.
Its a C10 super Cheyenne.
Building the house in Ninilchik. That's between Kenai and Homer, I plan on fishing a lot.

Beautiful part of the state. I've only been t Juneau, but intend to get back and roam....probably never this early in the year though ;-)

Could you not just ship your firearms to FFL in AK and pick them up there?

Most rifles and shotguns shouldn't be a problem. High capacity clips and hand guns will be a problem. Have a list of your guns and enquire before you get to the border about what is acceptable before you get there.

Re: moving to alaska

As said above I would ship from a FFL to a FFL all firearms and ammo. Could save a lot of headaches at the border.

Make sure you declare all your guns, ammo and any kind of switchblade knives, which be confiscated anyway. Even you are totally honest and declare everything our zealous CBS Officers make do a thorough check of you, your vehicle, trailer etc. I'm a Canadian Citizen and have been put through the wringer coming back into Canada. If you have a Criminal Record, depending what its for and how long ago they may refuse you entry into Canada.

I've wanted to move to Alaska for years now. I can handle the cold and snow, Not sure if I want to deal with the mosquitos which I hear are plentiful. The vast wilderness and lack of people is what I crave.

The other thing to consider is if you or anyone traveling with you has had DUI in the past there are extra hoops to jump thru to get into Canada.
Oh you will need an up to date pass port or enhanced DL.
