1976 Bench Seat Cover Question
I just bought a 1976 GMC K15 High Sierra and took the bench seat out to see if there may be any factory paperwork underneath. I can see that the original seat cover has been replaced but wanted to ask if the original bench would have had material in the back and on the bottom of the seat.
I can remember seeing material there in past trucks IÂ’ve owned and only remember usually being able to see seat springs. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks Scott |

There was never material between the foam and springs. Now when the Benchseat was recovered, people add it for several reasons.
I restored Benchseats (10 years) and seatbelts, which I still do the seatbelts. But once I repaired & restored the frame, I would but a layer of jute or burlap between the foam and springs. It would give the foam a little more protection, because they would always get worn by the spring. Especially the 81-87 seats. Another reason is that it adds a little thickness, so when the new cover was installed it was definitely nice and tight. |

One thing your seat is definitely missing, is the big spring on the drivers side track.

Re: 1976 Bench Seat Cover Question
Hey TKCR, thanks for pointing that out. I’ll have to find one in the junk yard or try to find one online.
I’m going to pull the seat out again and remove the bottom spring cover material and see if any paperwork is hiding. Thanks Scott |

That spring can be bought new online. There are 2 sizes. One for the 73-76 tracks and one for the 77-80 tracks. Let me see if I can remember which is which, and where to get one for you. It’s just been awhile so I can’t remember all the little details, lol. |
