Well I took my truck if for final paint yesterday. It's been a long time coming. Rick's Custom upholstery should be done in the next couple of weeks. Truck paint should be done by end of next week. So I am planning on it being drivable by end of June. Old painter bailed after not wanting to fix some issues. New shop is a Chevrolet dealership where I do too much business. Said they would love to help me out. They were slow and really are giving my a break. Stopped by today and already have it ready for primer.:metal:

What color scheme you go with?

Re: headed off to paint.

It's a 50th anniversary truck. I did change the color just a little bit to 1978 Trams am gold. It's just a little flashier but still close enough for a resto mod. The interior is keeping the same theme with the white and gold but the gold is cashew now. Ricks Buddy seat system I didn't use the Buddy Buckets I have. And there door panels and arm rest also in white and cashew. The tailgate is correct in the picture.

The body looks straight on it. Are you going single stage or base coat clear coat?

Basecoat clear coat. There are a few pictures of the build in my profile somewhere. I have trouble finding it most day's.

That's interesting that the Dealer has the best paint job quote.
Thirty years ago, when I first bought my '71 GMC K/1500 Jimmy, the local GMC dealer offered to 'Freshen it up'' for me for only $1000.
I think that included Body, Paint and Mechanical.
But that's like $5000 now, and I didn't have it.
In retrospect, it sounds like a good deal. But economics is different over time...
Do they still have RPO516 Orange?

I couldn't tell you about the orange. They had to cross reference the ppg code. The body work was 95% done and sealed. They did a couple of test swatches to make sure it was right. My first painter got the color right on the bed and inside of the cab. Hit me up for $2600.00 for another gallon of gold, clear and activator. when I got the cab back I had two very different colors. He didn't want to fix it so we parted ways. The cab is the wrong color the bed is right.

I wouldn't deal with a painter with that attitude either. Or work ethics and job quality. One's Saddle Metallic and the other Champaigne.
For that price there must've been real Gold Foil in his paint!

Just kidding about the Omaha Orange. I see it on other makes, Dodge Chargers and Rams, and Subaru Crosstreks can come in Crosstrek Orange [but only Crosstreks!]. Plus VWs and Fords. It was a color a lot of municipalities wanted back in the day, and currently too. Mine's kinda sunburned, but still more Orange than patina. If I put on a fresh body panel, I would need an artist to match the wear patterns. Not really interested in a repaint yet.

Good luck at the shop.

I feel for ya, got rid of my project cause lots of painters can be such that way. Buddy of mine got into a tangle also, after speaking with him at length he pulled his rig after spending approximately 20k for unfinished work.

Why I oughtta !!!!

$2600 for gallon of paint with additives? That’s incredible I used single stage the PPG production line a gallon all in was about 500 yes it’s cheaper than BC/CC but that’s just ridiculously priced .

Color being wrong is why we would always order more than needed for the job and even go so far as to box the two gallons so they matched . But he should have done a test panel if he ordered more paint to check the match this is all on him . Those colors aren’t even close to the same you did the right thing to get your truck out of that shop

Hey Rick, truck is looking fantastic! I love the anniversary trucks. When you get it back from paint, that is when the the real fun begins ;)

Wow! Not much of a painter if he couldn't see that difference.

I'm a professional artist and even I can tell those colors don't match! Lol. Hard to go wrong with Anniversary Gold on a 68. Congrats!

Rick Bollinger 06-02-2025 06:33 PM

Re: headed off to paint.

The $2600 was for 2 gallons one gold one clear and activator. I knew where he bought the first gallon so I called and one gallon of gold was all he bought there, So he didn't even get the second gallon from the same dealer. Paint is stupid crazy so it probably was close to that price. If he would have gotten the good quality of paint like the first one. It's being straightened out now so I suppose that's what matters.

Re: headed off to paint.

I don't have any ideas of a direction, but am glad to see a 68 Golden getting upgrades!!!

I'll be looking through our profile to find the build.

The factory color of that gold is not appealing to most. I'd be willing to bet that it is the same Tiger Gold used on some 60's GTO's.

Les you are right. I am looking forward to putting all the bits together to finish it. It was pretty nerve wracking to drill 38 holes in the new panels.
