Thanks for posting Bob. The real star for heavy duty trucking was the 427 with 11K front and 23K rear. However, these lower production heavies racked up high mileages early on and have a much lower survival rate, the lighter GVW versions, mainly used on farms, are the vast majority we see today.

Very true, lots of CS/CE 40 and 50 ex-farm trucks still around.

Funny thing, the 427 was indeed an excellent heavy truck gas engine, and Ford really didn't have a competitor for it. Ford had the FT 391 which could not match the 427's horsepower or torque. The larger 'Super Duty' V-8's available in Ford heavy trucks were more expensive, very heavy, and had poor fuel economy. In the mid-70's Ford came out with a '475' version of the Super Duty V-8 for the F series medium duty trucks which still produced less horsepower than the 427 (200 vs. 220). In 1979 Ford introduced the Lima 429 truck engine which finally was competitive with the 427.

Good points, makes me wonder why Ford didn't produce a truck version of the lighter 427-428 engine they had 10 years earlier.
