Passed Smog

1 Attachment(s)
Was sweating bullets for a while, had to get my 83 smogged this year, went thru the normal routine prior to taking it in, new plugs, cap and rotor, finally switched out the plug wires and coil as they have been on the truck since I don't know when, and oil change and filters, went on the rollers and he did the initial test and it failed, high HC readings, under the hood he went and he made some adjustments and I could hear the RPM 's change, this went on three times and on the final run all the lights were green on the tester, PASS.
HATE GOING THRU THIS CRAP EVERY 2 YEARS. :m6:

I helped one guy I worked with years ago.
He would always come find me at his testing time.

I would pull the PCV valve out and plug it, then drop the timing till it would barely run.

It would pass with flying Colors.

That just made no sense at all.

After it passed I would put it back the way it was.:ito:

They didn't even raise the hood or put a mirror under the vehicle back then.:chevy::chevy::chevy:

I put a AEM wideband air fuel gauge in mine because the mechanics here in CO look at a carb like it is a space alien addition. It sometimes get addictive watching the air fuel gauge and what it is doing.

in Texas this year all inspections are no longer needed on trucks/autos of a certain age. Not sure of the age but my 78 did not need inspection. YEA

Loco, I completely can understand your panick, I too went thru the same angst as I was getting my LS swapped '86 to pass emissions her in PHX AZ. the engine aspect ofcourse passed easily, but the equipment aspect was a hassle. I had to (luckily still had) connect the OG Canister to "atleast" look like it was connected correctly . for me the real hassle was the fuel tanks and vacuum hold. I "learned" a few tricks to get by & was able to get a "pass". out here AZ allows the ability to get a 5yr tag so I luckily have a few years left to drive before having to jump thru the hoops again. I think it is soo silly, the engine runs soo much cleaner than the original 305 Carb motor, but yet the state makes it soo hard to let this happen. :smoke:

Re: Passed Smog

NY no emissions testing on cars and trucks over 25 years old . And the ones that still get emissions all they do is plug in to the computer if you have no check engine light you pass as long as the computer test ready so you can’t clear a code just prior to testing . My 07 3500 with a Cummins has never been emissions tested . Sometimes NY gets things right.

Even if you put a new LS motor in a vehicle over 25 years old no emissions testing just the safety inspection. And I think it’s $12 bucks for safety and $21 for emissions with safety

But then again you rarely see a 25 or older car being used as an everyday driver .

Texas has not tested emissions on vehicles 25yrs or older (as part of the inspections) for decades. It was 'Safety' only.

I meant to say Texas now doesn't even have a safety inspection on older vehicles. no inspection at all for anything kind.

Newer vehicles 2-24yrs old still require emissions testing (no check engine light w/proper drive cycle time).
