Front Suspension differences between 1964-1965?
1 Attachment(s)
Howdy folks.
I'm planning to replace all of the front end suspension components on my 1964 C10 this fall. When looking around at parts and complete kits I've noticed a lot of them show the parts are compatible for 1963-1964 or 1965-1966 C10s. The kit in the below image says 1965-1966 C10. I thought 1963-1966 were the same but I'm just learning. Is that not correct? If so what are the differences between 1964-1965? |
Re: Front Suspension differences between 1964-1965?
In the winter I replaced the steering components on my 63. My understanding is the, at least for the 63, the outer tie rod is short and the sleeve to connect the inner and the outer are long. The 65-66 in your picture has the inner and outer about the same length and the shorter adjuster sleeve. When I went looking for parts, I can't remember if I could not find the 63 tie rods or maybe they were more expensive. I went with all 65-66 parts on mine. I did add disc brakes so I didn't use the original spindles. But again, my understanding is the spindles are same for 63-66. I would definitely confirm what I am saying here. But, I think this is what I have read. If you are interested, my video below is the one when I reassemble my suspension.

I've been doing some more digging and i believe you are correct.
it looks like the tie rods were different 1965-1970. If that's the only difference and i am replacing everything anyway i might as well get the 65-66 parts. Quote:

Re: Front Suspension differences between 1964-1965?
If you intend to use drop spindles at any point in the future, now might be the time... Specifically, I bought drop spindles for a square body to upgrade to the final development of these front suspension components - I believe everything kept getting bigger and bigger in several waves - you have identified the first splitting these early to mid-60's trucks. Doing so allowed me to use these stronger components, but did contribute to my "One Piece at a Time Problem"... My suspension and brakes are for an 80 C10, my trans is a '94, my engine a '74, the rear axle is like a '96, so on and so on... LOL
