cut or lowering springs.

Have been told cutting one coil is about 2" drop on front end. Also told no difference in ride over lowering springs. My mechanical mind sees reasoning in that.

I have also read and been told cut springs will have harsher ride. Can see possible but at same time has same load at same height. Should be equal load effectively. So same ride or harsher, If harsher how noticeable

While think far from lazy I rather not have to pull frontend apart twice if can do once. Just like to get opinions of those who have been there before me. So cars not exactly like women. LOL

While posting would like to thank all who have replied to this and tons of other questions I have had in this section, Not really my style to ask question but then suspensions not really part of me norm working arena either. Now throw bunch of engine parts in front of me or stack of tubing for new chassis or piece of metal and picture of end product and I may have one question. Thanks for replies on this and all my maybe dumb questions.

Re: cut or lowering springs.

We did about a dozen '69 - '87 pickups back in the day with cut coils.

I never noticed a harsher ride (unless people are talking about hitting the bump stops).

The red truck in my avatar has 30 years and 200,000 miles of daily driving with cut coils.

Re: cut or lowering springs.

I cut 1.5 coils from mine(74), got almost exactly 3" drop maybe slightly more.

No change in "firmness", much less body roll in corners.

I'd do it again.

Like you said, Worst case you have to pull it apart again. But I figured, cutting coils is free so why not try it first

you will not see a ride difference with 1 cut coil

Re: cut or lowering springs.

Aftermarket 'drop' coils can be of a higher spring rate vs what comes in any given truck. I typically cut 1-coil off stock springs if I like the ride quality it currently has.

Some trucks have lighter duty springs & just cutting a coil yields less than quality ride results because there's not enough spring rate. In my perspective, it's free to trim the coils already in hand & see what you get. if the ride is not what's desired, go aftermarket.

3 Attachment(s)
Clip 2 coils cut bump stops off and a Flip was my go to forever.
Cut the bump stops off the frame
Longer bolts in the upper control arms to make the alignment work.

Recently bagged and drop spindled the truck.
And notched it.
Love the look but generally rides similar.

Clip 2 coils and a flip- thats it

Re: cut or lowering springs.

guessing by flip you are talking about axle with leaf springs. trailing arm suspension here. Doing front coils for 2 to 3 inches probably 2 with springs and going waht ever gives inch less drop in rear, Then may go with spindles and shorter in rear later.

That pic with chrome wheels, stance and color is bad ass .The dog jiust add some bonus points,LOL

Re: cut or lowering springs.

I cut 1 coil off and 2 1/2 drop spindles looks good. But when i jack it up from the frame the coil falls out of its mount on top. Then when you let it down it will bang back in eventually Still in the construction phase so no ride characteristics to report.
