2015 Chevy 2500HD Duramax Starter Replacement Starter Noise

My 2015 Chevy 2500HD Duramax began a starter noise after starting and when the Bendix gear was backing out. I bought a new replacement GM Genuine 12721722 replacement -- I figured solenoid release problem.
I found info on the web that helped but few details. Was a struggle but successful. The nine pics are supposedly in order. With my 2 post lift it took me 3.5 hours to remove the old starter. Disconnect both batteries ground. Use a short 15mm 12 point wrench for the cable on the solenoid and a 5/16" quarter inch socket/rachet on the small lug. Remove 3 motor mount bolts with a 15mm socket using a long extension with impact wrench or rachet. I used a screw jack stand to raise the engine as much as I could get --- maybe an inch off the mount tower. Another 1/2 inch would have been nice. Remove the bottom starter bolt first with a long and short extension thru the front -- pic. Then the top bolt with a 15mm short socket or a long 15mm wrench. Once you break the 2 inch long bolts they unscrew easy. Remove all three 15mm nuts on the exhaust pipe so collar is loose. Now cuss, spit, sow some grass seed and drink a PBR. You will most likely still need a pry bar to get old starter out (raising engine with exhaust manifold) and install new on see pics closely. The solenoid does not have to be removed. Took me 3 1/2 hours to the point of the old starter removed. I did not know which end came out first. But pics show how it ended up working. Another 1/2 hour to put new starter in. With another 2 hours to put everything back together and tools put away. This solved my starter noise. I am 72 and will be sore tomorrow. 8-) |
