Tilt Steering Column and Factory Wheel?

I've been looking at column options as i am planning to install an automatic in place of the 3 on the tree.

Most of the options i am seeing appear to require a 67+ or aftermarket steering wheel.

Is there no way to keep the original steering wheel?

Also do the aftermarket columns work with the original parking brake levers?

Yes, the aftermarket columns will work with the parking brake mechanism, the wheels I am not sure of, mine were all to far gone to keep…

To piggy back on this post and to give it more traction I'll add a related question are c60 steering wheels the same spline as the c10s...kinda want to use my "big Wheel" on a tilt column. Thanks in Advance!

Re: Tilt Steering Column and Factory Wheel?

Hi.
My tilt column came off ebay, those made in china white box type.
My original steering wheel , i have a 63, fits but the cancel cam didnt work out, had to modify it, used one from another car, cant say for what it is, just found it somewhere and used it , and bolted it to back of steering wheel, my horn button is on the dash, so no contact rings etc to worry about and i still have the park brake lever under the column, there will be some mods or fabricating to make it fit. Mostly to secure it, its a smooth tube, no holes, no brackets.

Cheers.
Adriaan.

I just finished replacing the modern wheel that came on my 66 panel with a 66 deluxe wheel that I restored. THe truck also has a 1970-72 C10 tilt column in it. The original wheels can be fitted onto the later tilt columns but it takes a special combination of parts to make it happen. I will try and detail those parts for you that I used to mount the wheel and even harder, make the stock horn ring blow the horn. I spent as least a month researching and sorting this out.

This list is for a 66 deluxe wheel on a 1970-72 tilt column, in order of assembly:
1. spring
2. black turn signal canceler with spring loaded horn contact
3. wheel with the original white turn signal canceler removed
4. steering wheel nut

These parts will make the horn ring function:
5. silver concave flat stainless steel contact spring with three tabs, installed concave side down
6. white or clear spacer ring align to the concave spring three notches.
7. Horn ring
8. plastic spacer with the three spacers and the thin ring holding them together and the three screws. Important to get the correct fit of the horn ring ot the wheel you select the proper spacer ring. They came with different heights of spacers. Mine took a .375 tall one but I have seen .25, .375, .50 and there may be more. You will have to figure out what size makes your particular combination work. luckily I had a parts stash of horn parts and had to try 2-3 different height rings until I found the one that worked.

That is what worked for my combination, it should work for non-tilt columns as well, but with slightly different parts. I know that the non-tilt columns don't use the spring in the bottom.

Oh my wheel is a 1966-67 Nova, same as the 66 C10 custom wheel except it has the 4 chrome paint dividers that i used to make mine a kustom custom wheel.

update- My right turn signal cancels but the left does not cancel. I'll have to find a different canceler or modify one to work.

I will update after I solve this issue. BH

ok, I think that I have identified the problem with the turn signals not canceling when converting to a tilt column 68-72 on a 1963-66 C10 and using retaining the early wheel.

The issue is that the tilt canceling cam when in the newer 68-72 wheel positions the horn contact at roughly a 11 o'clock position that puts the canceling cams turn signal canceling nubs in the proper 9 o'clock position.

When the same canceling cam is installed with the early wheel the horn contact hole in the early wheel is located at the 2 o'clock position, 45 degrees clockwise from the originlal applications position. This why the right turn signal will not cancel. you nust reorientate the tun signal canceling nubs back to the 9 o'clock position to solve the problem.

So, my solution is to remove copper ring.

Cut the horn contact plunger boss off of the canceling cam, and rotate it 45 degrees clockwise and re-glue it in place.

So I drill a hole the same size as the horn contact plunger boss. I the cut off the plunger boss flush to the cam and re-glued it to the cam in the new rotated position.

The cam now has the horn contact plunger positioned at 2 o'clock and the cancelling cam nubs at 9 o'clock.

i have not installed it yet, but it should work as long as the super glue joint holds up.

I will report back to you all about the results.

This belongs as a sticky in the FAQ section. Good info.

I think the signal cancel cam is finally fixed. I found some glue that so far is holding for the relocated horn contact on the canceling cam.

I will make a more detailed reply and report back to the group. BH
