Accessory issues 383 stroker
1 Attachment(s)
I’m installing the power steering and alternator and having issues with both . First the bracket for the adjustment isn’t fitting correctly it suppose to go to the two holes on the motor mount I was only able to get one attached. I also had to cut the other bracket to clear the balancer . I had planned on using the three groove crank pulley from the 350 I took out of the 72 but that didnt line up to the alternator. So I pulled the one off the 327 and I realized that there was no crank bolt holding everything together on the 327 only thing holding the pulley was the three small bolts .

Pictures of the only way I can get the alternator to somewhat work . If I put the adjuster bracket on the water pump bolt like it was I have no adjustment on it . I put a 69-72 bracket on the head because the original setup the bracket was part of the exhaust manifold . I just mocked it up with a spacer and a bolt
I’m wondering if the adjustment bracket on a 68 is different than the 69-72 . Maybe the 68 is shorter? |

And now to the crank pulley I put the original 327 on and I would need a crank bolt 4 inches long just doesn’t seem right . It’s also not a GM pull it’s an Acme brand most likely the put it on for the aftermarket AC . Any ideas about what the hell is going on .

I can’t put the single pulley on the newer crank pulley because the lip that rides in the balancer is in the way the 327 pulley fits into the lip on the single pulley . The lip on the single pulley rides in the balancer so the newer pulley and the single lip are the same .

The newer 3 groove pulley

Re: Accessory issues 383 stroker
I believe the crank pulley is the wrong one it’s for a long water pump . I’m going to order a pulley for a short pump .

Re: Accessory issues 383 stroker
When I had alternator fitment issues I used Alan Grove to buy a bracket that worked.

Re: Accessory issues 383 stroker
Welcome to pulley hell. There are so many combinations that wont work it will blow your mind. I went through this on mine. Use the search function there are threads out there on this. Do not just order parts. Find the correct part numbers first verify what you have then order what you don't. Guarantee if you order what you need without doing this you will still be lost without what you need. Hopefully someone will post the part numbers that you need. The alt bracket bolts to the left bolt on the front of the head with your back bracket. No A/C correct? different pulleys.

I definitely have the wrong upper bracket . The one I have is much longer .

Got it pretty much sorted out I drilled a new hole in the adjuster bracket . Couple of shims here and there . Only problem is that the filler for the power steering is blocked . Can’t get it off without loosening the pump . For now it will work I’m thinking about putting an aftermarket passenger side mount for the alternator. Would solve the issue

Re: Accessory issues 383 stroker
'68 Vs Aftermarket is always a crapshoot. I had an '82 Buick Regal that I put a rebuilt engine in. The rebuilt was ALL US hardware, and the original engine had mixed US/metric. I was back to the selling store so many times for fasteners that it was ridiculous. I put AC on a '56 Chevy I owned in '84. Same kind of teething pains. I hope that you find what you need, easily.

Re: Accessory issues 383 stroker
I have been messing with SBC's all my life and have never seen a balancer pulley like the one you have pictured.
This truck should have a short water pump. Your style appears to be the long style. If you have the budget for it, take it all off and begin with the right stuff. It will go in just like it was engineered. :) Another option is to use a longer belt on the PS pump. That should rotate the pump enough to get the cap on and off. If you need to notch the frame for the pulley. |

I got it yesterday hopefully it will line up . I tried to rotate the power steering pump to its full extension without a belt and the fill is still blocked . I did put a slightly longer belt on it by about half an inch than what was on the 327 . All the pulleys line up it was just the top adjuster that needed a few shims to get it perpendicular . |

Got the right crank pulley and had to return the belts I bought because the oem style pulley is larger in diameter than the aftermarket set up that was on it . So I’m pretty much back to stock belts . And now I can open the power steering pump fill without fiddling with anything .
