vent window re-build or buy remanufactured?
 

All,

Have any of you rebuilt your vent windows and if so what was your experience?

My vent frame rails would need painted/new glass/ etc....

Classic Industries has black frames with tinted or clear glass but with
chrome around the vent glass for $273.99ea. with a 20% discount over $299
would bring me in at 219.99 ea for a pair minus shipping of course.

Seems like I can focus my efforts on other area's of my truck for that $?
I am leaning towards a green tint.

All thoughts welcome :)

I rebuilt mine. They were intact with OK original glass but needed seals, freeing up and de-rusting.
Counterpart seals came from KMS tools for about $50C
I found a glass company locally that could sell me the glass setting tape cheaply (name brand places were no help, small family shop knew exactly what I needed). it was something under $20C
the window channel for roll up window was part of the cab weatherstrip kit I already had.

Taking it all apart was about what you'd expect involving some heat and patience. Then there was wire wheeling, painting and a spot of weld / rust repair on one frame bottom where it attaches to door.
The hardest part by far was forcing the glass with setting tape wrapped around it back into the frame, that involved 4 or 5 rubber footed quick grip clamps, some rubber lube and willingness to take it to the braking limit (or so it seemed)

It all turned out fine, they don't leak in the rain, but you get a little trickle if you hit the window horizontally with hose when washing. This past month my drivers side has loosened up so it won't stay open at speed, I'll have to open up the door and look, but I assume I'll need a washer to increase spring tension unless the nut has fallen off or something.

I'd do it again, the repops are $500C each

It comes down to available time to spend vs avaiable funds to spend. The little pieces to repair one aren't all that expensive but the process is time consuming and requires a lot of patience. Some of us have as many hours a week as we want to spend working on our trucks or other automotive projects and some due to demanding schedules might have three or four honest hours a week that we can dedicate undivided attenton to our trucks. One thing I have always said is if you work on your car or truck as a hobby make sure that your significant other has their own hobbies be it sewing, crafting, gardening or ? The happiest couples are ones who feel that their partner's hobby time is also their own project time to do their own thing.

The other thing is DO NOT BROWBEAT anyone because they buy a part or pay someone to do a task or tasks on their project because they are not comfortable or don't have the time, skill or tools and equipment to accomplish the task. That doesn't fly with me.
