Driveshaft for short bed LS swap
I'm deep into swapping an LQ9 into a 72 short bed. I am using LSX Innovations motor plates and factory engine mounts, 4L65E built and a factory 12 bolt. I was contemplating having a custom shaft built but decided to do a little junkyard crawl. A factory Crown Vic 1350 shaft fit my needs perfectly. I ordered a 1350 series 27 spline slip yoke for the front and will use a Moog 348 conversion joint for the rear. It fits perfectly. My yard happened to have several police interceptors in, and they have 3.5" aluminum shafts that were high speed balanced, the family car usually has a steel shaft.

^ that is the kind of information I love to find on forums. I don't need it right now but good post!
recording the actual length of the crown vic shaft may help people doing other combinations |
Re: Driveshaft for short bed LS swap
Do you recall the year on the crown Vic?
I went with this https://www.alldrivelines.com/1967-1...veshaft-steel/ Awesome intel on the crown Vic shaft. |
Re: Driveshaft for short bed LS swap
After your mods to the drive shaft are you going to have it balanced? You should.

Re: Driveshaft for short bed LS swap
The Crowns have a 55.5" +- center to center 1350 shaft from about 1995 to 2012. Total length is listed as 64.62". Most of them are steel in the family cars but the police interceptors came with a 3.5" aluminum shaft that was high speed balanced and designed for the extra abuse. The only change I'm making is the front slip yoke which will not require balancing. I have been contemplating changing to an 8.8 diff at some point and this shaft will bolt right up with the factory rear flange yoke reinstalled. There is also a long wheelbase Crown that lists a longer shaft.

Re: Driveshaft for short bed LS swap
I installed mine today. With a standard length 3-3-6081X 1350 series 27 spline yoke and a 1350 to 1310 rear conversion joint it fit perfectly. Measure first to make sure the 55.5" center to center will work for you. There are many variables in engine mounts.
