47-54 4 link with Mustang 8.8 swap
Im curious if anyone has used the foxbody Mustang 8.8 in a 47-54 GM truck since its about the right width, and used the factory upper control arm mounts to fabricate a triangulated 4 link. I see folks using the Explorer rearend and using a aftermarket 4 link but I haven't seen anyone use the Mustang housing.

The general issue is the width of the lower mounts being further apart then a typical truck frame.
You could get ladder bar lower links after you cut the lower bar bracket off, and it would be a damn fine base to play with. I am using the Crown Vic 8.8 in my 54, but its a 210 post. I am adding 9 inch ends to it to use cut to fit axles. Although I am keeping the leaf springs for simplicity. |

Maybe it doesn't help but my 98 Wrangler with a LS6/4L60E swap I used a Explorer 8.8. Came with 4:10 gears and disc brakes. I used JKS adjustable control arms. They have adjustable rod ends on both ends so you don't have to unbolt them to adjust. Just crack the jam nut loose and adjust as needed for pinion angle.
Just a note. The axle tubes on these 8.8's are thin and easy to cut thru if you are cutting off the current axle bracket. Ask me how I know. On a positive side the 8.8 has been bullet proof for over 15 years. |
