Drum Backplate Repair
1 Attachment(s)
Is there a way to repair the surface of the backplate that the shoe rides on? This is for a 65 K20 rear. Pretty sure new, or even decent used, replacements are not an option.
Thanks for any help, Tom |

Weld it.

That's what I was gonna say...

Re: Drum Backplate Repair
Thanks, that’s what I was thinking might work. Wondering how to get them nice and level afterwards? All I’ve got is a hand grinder and not sure how perfect they need to be.

Re: Drum Backplate Repair
I just did this on my '66 to try to get the brakes to stop sticking partially engaged. I only welded the divots, then used a 2" roloc disc to grind the welds until they were just level with the original pads.

Re: Drum Backplate Repair
Thanks Astronaut, looks like you got them pretty good. Not sure what a roloc disc is though.

Re: Drum Backplate Repair
Basically a 2" sanding disc that goes on an angle die grinder. Twist-to-lock attachment by 3M is where "roloc" comes from
Even a sanding disc on an angle grinder can work (be gentle). |

Thanks to all for the helpful replies, I’ll give it a try

Then in another 60 years you can do it again.
