Reproduction pre 70 painted gas cap for $20
3 Attachment(s)
It always bothered me that my truck with painted bumpers and caps had the stainless gas cap. It should have had a body color matched painted cap. The correct cap is not smooth like the stainless cap but has a second smaller circle in the center. I have seen NOS caps listed on eBay for north of $175. (There’s on on there now. Correct P/N 3914958 ) apparently these also fit a 62 corvette or something so perhaps people think they’re worth their weight in gold. I was angry with myself because I forgot to bid on one recently that was in great shape in the original box and sold for $30.
Than kicked in my detective skills. Some other GM had to use a similar cap. I started looking at pictures of Corvair rampside trucks and FC van line. And I found what looked like the exact cap. Sure enough Clark’s Corvair parts makes a reproduction cap that is primed ready to paint cap for 61-65 Corvair van. And it’s only $19.80. Well I’m happy to report that it arrived here today and it is in fact a perfect fit! The underside of the cap even matches near perfect to the stainless cap I have now. So if you're in the market for an original painted cap and don’t feel like fighting the corvette crowd on eBay, wander over to Clark’s Corvair parts. The part number is C1012. I plan to get this painted to match soon. |

Thats a great tip. Makes perfect sense GM would use the same cap for different vehicles.
I like Clarks because they have reasonable prices for the reproduction parts |

There was the same cap made in polished stainless steel. GM 3927086.

Nice I never Seen the Polished One like that. Perhaps that was the Correct Polished cap from back in the day. Gas caps were lost and replaced pretty easily or Upgraded quickly to chrome along the way.

Re: Reproduction pre 70 painted gas cap for $20
I had a beautiful 516 Orange gas cap on my '68 C/10 Stepside when I bought it. But I was a 23 y.o. kid. I soon learned not to put the gas cap on top of the crossbed tool box, as it would eventually fly off in trraffic and turning. Better to leave it on top of the pump, and come back for it later. Usually it's still sitting there. In over 50 years, I've only lost two that way. Either the station cleaned up on closing and tossed it out, or I couldn't get back that way, being on the road.

It looks nice. Does the (cardboard looking) gasket hold up well over time? |

They said this type of material was commonly used on oil cap and gas caps originally. I like doing business with them. They respond Quickly.:chevy: |
