A/C 250ci 6 cyl dipstick length

2 Attachment(s)
I have recently bought a factory a/c 69 c10 with a 250 6cyl.

Dipstick tube is bolted to front of compressor. I checked oil first time and it showed it was barely on the tip of the dipstick. Eyeballing it, it looks like dipstick is too short to reach down into the pan. Possible?

It runs fine, does not overheat on first drives but concerned if I add oil (a couple quarts) it will be way overfull if stick is too short & not measuring all the way down.

Is an a/c dipstick longer? Or am I really just that low on oil?

Here is a pic of the routing on both. On my other 6 it is straight down the side. I'd measure both but the blue one is at the farm @ 60 mi away. The one in the green truck is @39 1/4" See pics.

Many thanks. George

I would play it safe and give it a fresh 5 quart oil change then check the reading on the dipstick. If you have to mark it on the dipstick, use a scratch-awl. I did this recently on an aftermarket dipstick that had an incorrect full mark

Off topic, but did you happen to buy this truck from the Ft. Wayne, IN area? If so, I saw this in person and it is a nice one for sure. Also, I agree with 68panelman's response to your original question.

I personally have never seen an in line 6 with that style dip stick tube. But I have never had one with the remote oil bath air filter either. All I have sen is like your 2nd picture. I agree with comments on doing oil change and check marks.

Turns out oil was that low. Dipstick measured full mark with the proper long filter. So it must be the proper stick for a factory a/c 6 250. Agree, unusual.
Yes, it came from Ft Wayne. Pretty good order, have to sort a few things, but very little. Drives excellent. Couldn't redo one for the price i paid. When I want ruff & ready I can drive the farm truck :-)
Appreciate the help all.
Happy Thanksgiving.

This is totally different from the stock dipstick for a 292 [L25] without A/C. Also the 292 has a Six Quart oil pan, not five like the 230 and 250 L6s.
Mine comes straight up at a slight angle around Cylinder No. 5.

I'm inclined to think that first one might be from a 70's G10 van.

Anyone have Ca Spec emissions info for 6 cyl trucks? 8’s had smog pumps n assorted things but Ive seen this configuration in pics on other left coast trucks. This engine has more vacuum hoses, fittings, levers on the intake than Ive ever seen. Feeding back into valve cover n carb. My other 69 is near clean if this junk. Ideas?

Using absolutes is difficult in old car stuff. For example the air cleaner is used in van configurations but have seen scads of them on 250/292’s. The a/c dipstick bent around for the 230 is a 292. The engineers figured something out to have it measure right for the stock 250 5 qt oil /filter change.

Not being argumentative just trying to figure out what’s here and if it came that way ir things “added” in it’s journey around owners.

Thanks.
