Power steering install. 72 c10 sbc

Search function does not work for me.

I have a 72 c10 with 307/4 spd

It does not have power steering

I want to put power steering on it. Stock.

First question: Re: water pump pulley and balancer pulley. I've done some window shopping and need a dual pulley set up but cant tell from adds what would fit. Can't figure it out based on advertising hype in various catalogs.

Second question: Re: power steering brackets. Same as a car? What range of years is correct for my 72. Are they reproduced?

Third question: Re: power steering pump. I see two types of pumps. I want the correct one for a 72 c10. Looks like there are two styles of pump early one looks like a bottle and later one is more square looking. Which one is correct for my 72? I've seen both styles mounted on a 72.

I think I may be able to figure out hoses and steering box but maybe not....

Thank you all for your help.

Call Speedway or Summit they can match your pump/pulleys up.

Im looking for bracket, pump and pulley pictures. For an original correct application.

Are '72 c10 small block power steering pumps like older ones? They look like a bottle. Or like the newer ones that were squared off looking containers?

Are the power steering pump mounting brackets the same as car ones or different?

And pulleys...

First step is to obtain correct two groove pullys for balancer and pump
Summit part number SUM-G3953B
Summit part number SUM-G3951B

about 95$ including tax for the pair.

I have already replaced the short water pump and added a HD AC/Delco harmonic balancer and timing marker, both from Summit.
I also replaced the cover seal as well.
Im going to regret not replacing the timing chain set and oil pump at this time.
Harmonic balancer from Summit runs about 100$ including tax
The timing pointer thingie, also from Summit goes for about 13$ including tax.

I used the proper harmonic balancer installation tool from Harbor Freight.

The timing mark on the balancer is actually a groove. I filled it with white paint. We'll see how theory transitions into reality.

Thermostat is a 160 degree item also from Summit
The heater hose nipples are from OReilly's

The heater hoses will be factory style reproduction, from Summit as well.

Reproduction tower clamps all around.

So. In the above image you see a new waterpump. It has a 5/8th inch diameter hub center shaft. I ordered a fan clutch. The fan clutch centers on the hub center shaft. However the fan clutch has a 3/4 inch diameter opening that goes over the water pumps 5/8th diameter centers shaft. So a difference of 1/8th of an inch exists.

A bushing must be installed. If it is not installed the fan will be horribly off center and thus, out of balance. This is unacceptable and undrivable.

The problem is that no such bushing comes with either the pump or any of the 3 fan clutches purchased . Installation instructions state clearly that the bushing must be used.

My past experience is that Hayden fan clutches come with the bushing

I am using a Hayden fan clutch part number 2705.

If you find you don't have the bushing and need it, consider these facts:

Bushing outside diameter is 3/4 of an inch. The inside diameter is 5/8ths of an inch
The depth of the center hole in the fan clutch is 1/2 inch.

I have found a source for these bushings readily available at local hardware store. I found a bronzer bushing 1 inch long for 3.50$.

One last thing to concider: assemble the fan, fan clutch , pulley to the water pump before installing the pump to the block. Otherwise trying to assemble them all together and properly start the fastener is very frustrating. Bolt it all together before mounting the pump

Moving forward
