1951 GMC Carb Linkage
Hi. I have a 51 GMC with a 292 and a 4-barrel intake with a holley 600 cfm cab. I'm wondering what will work best for a cable linkage setup for the carb. I don't want to have to buy an aftermarket setup like Lokar. Someone must have found a stock setup from some other vehicle that can be adapted and works well. Whether for a v-8 or whatever. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ron.

I've probably had more gas pedal and cable setups in my 48 than I can even count, One for one day before I pulled it back out and tossed it in the trash. The big problem with later model pedals in AD trucks is that they are not the least bit comfortable for your ankle or foot. I think I have a pedal out of a 66 Mustang II fastback in it now. It isn't all that comfortable but is better than most of the ones it replaced and that is at least a half dozen.
The Lokar style works as a bellcrank on the engine side of the firewall. It shouldn't be that hard to fab your own using your stock pedal and part of the old rod or part of a damaged old rod like I have a couple of. I'm not sure I would cut up a good one that wasn't already bent or modified as they are getting hard to find in nice shape. It would take some fabricating but if you have a welder nothing that can't be done at home. A piece of light angle for the bracket, a piece of metal to make the bell crank out of and one might actually use the original bell crank off the side of the old engine if you have it. The hard part is figuring out the ratio of the bell crank so you can have the gas pedal at the correct static angle and still get full throttle. The other thing is making good pivot points so it works smoothy. I used a mid 70s C10 pedal, it pulls a cable through the firewall.
I re-bent the pedal arm to line it up with the carb, drilled a hole, filed it square for the c10 bulkhead fitting to snap into. Bolted pedal to the floor in a place that felt comfortable then fine tuned the bending on both sides of mount to get full throttle travel when it hit the carpet and a comfortable location & pedal angle at 1/3 throttle.. Attachment 2441041 To shorten the cable at the carb, I used bit of nichrome brake line and crimped it on. It has worked out fine mechanically and comfort wise and did not cost a penny since I had the pedal assembly already |

I have done several with the leegreen method. bending as required. ensure to have your full flooring material thickness under the pedal so that doesn't mess you up later.
sometimes the connection at the carb end can be placed at different locations on the carb lever to modify the amount the pedal travels. closer to the throttle shaft pivot point gives less pedal movement needed but also gives a touchy throttle pedal, like a little pedal movement goes a long way on the rpm curve |
