I am seeing videos about Chevy and Fords

10 speed transmissions ,,Any of you own one or know about any between the years of 2019 to 2025 that have had big problems ,like the rear wheels locking up and shuttering in the transmission .............or needed replaced .or parts replaced ? The cost must be enormous , another thing I wonder is this problem happening more with the diesel engined trucks and could that be because most diesel trucks haul much heavier loads and make the transmission hotter and causing their problems being more?

Your thoughts

I see more issues published about the 10-speeds in the full size SUV's than in pickups. Here is the latest recall for 2022 model years

I can't decide of how much I believe with what ai read concerning the 10 speed general motors transmission defects And the vidios on the internet of guys talking about the problems seem to differ

(just want to add that your photo of the yellow truck looks just lke the 1956 I owned back when I was 18 years old except mine had a stack on the drivers side that came up beside the bed )

My turbo diesel f250 has a six speed auto trans. It's awesome. Especially on the highway cruising 65 mph at 1800 rpm.

My 2006 Chevy 1500 diesel had a 6 speed Allison and that was a real good combo sure did like the plus and minus on the shifter , I bet it was comaparable to your f250 and 6 speed ..New rigs are having much more problems I thnk

I had 16 Silverado 1500 with a 6.2/8 speed combo. Zero issues with the 6.2. The 8 speed never was great. Hard upshifts when cold. Sometimes hard down shifts. Had it into the dealer 1/2 dozen times for GM "updates". Never really helped. Never left me anywhere but I was happy to see it go.
Traded it for 20 Silverado 1500 with the 6.2/10 speed combo. The 10 speed was a great trans. Never an issue.

.

I read somewhere that the 10 speed recall/fix was software only and was more of a safety check to ensure no rear-wheel-lockup upon failure rather than a real solution....not unlike the 6.2 engine failure recall/fix (changed oil viscosity only)...also not unlike the required new maintenance procedures imposed on the expensive tranny fluid on the C8 corvette (trying to prevent more failures there and make future warranty claims difficult).

They aren't alone....all the manufactures do these same sorts of things...some are worse than others though.

I also am under the impression that Ford and GM built that 10speed tech jointly.

YMMV,

-Kevin

All brands have problems, some more than others.
Here awhile back I read about Allison ending their association with GM. There is a real reason why but we may never know the full reason.
Did GM design it and Allison build it or was it totally an Allison design?
At our age I do not intend to buy any more vehicles but if I do I don't intend to buy anything newer than 2009 or 10. I can still do some work on those and they don't have nearly as many doodabs and whatnots to go bad. ;)

Re: I am seeing videos about Chevy and Fords

The “Allison’s” in the 2020-early 2026 HD trucks have never been real Allison built units. The real deal, Allison designed and built, bad ass Allison 1000 died at the end of the 2019 my run with the end of that generation of trucks. The current trucks had basically an Allison “spec” transmission in it which is basically an hd variant of the GM/Ford 10 speed. Gm didnt want to pay Allison for the naming rights anymore, so supposedly any HD trucks left in GM dealer stock after Christmas Eve 2025 were supposed to have the Allison badges removed from what I read a while back.

Okay that tells alot ,, thanks

So, I ll ask right you out of your opinion what do you think about the ,,,,,,,,Hydra-Matic 10 L80 that came out in the 2019 GMC Denali 1500 ? Is it durable to last if one doesnt pull a heavy trailer ? Or is somthing else bad with ?

57taskforce 03-01-2026 01:05 PM

Re: I am seeing videos about Chevy and Fords

I wouldn’t hesitate to pull a trailer with one at all. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it as intended. The thing about the internet is you see and read a lot of the bad experiences that people have but a much fewer percentage of people post the good experiences they have with the same exact thing. I’ve driven several of the GM and Ford 10 speeds in their respective vehicles in both 1/2 ton and HD trucks at work and not had any troubles with any of them. I’ve pulled heavy in GM 1 ton and ford 1 ton trucks with them. I’ve even been looking at buying new 3/4 ton duramax for my self.

Re: I am seeing videos about Chevy and Fords

I had a 2008 Chevrolet 2500 with the Duramax Allison combo that had zero issues with 150K on the clock mostly towing a 14K pound 5th wheel all across the country.

We went to a little bigger 5th wheel and to a 2013 Ram 6.7 Cummins HD 3500 DRW with the Aisin 6 speed. It has the same operating characteristics of the Allison, but the shifts are a little harsher. I've researched the shifting, simply because the Allison was so much smoother shifting, and what I read is the Aisin AS69RC was designed for the HD High Output Cummins therefore it has stronger clutch packs which result in a harsher shift.
Zero problems with this one also with 95k on the clock.

My brother has a 2025 Ford 6.7 Diesel with the 10-speed transmission and that I know of no issues with it so far either.

Re: I am seeing videos about Chevy and Fords

What I "heard" in regards to the GM 8 speed both GM and Ford went to Germany and bought the rights to build the 8 speed in the US. Ford left it as designed by the Germans.
GM decided they save money buy using cheaper internal parts and it didn't go well.

57taskforce 03-01-2026 09:24 PM

Re: I am seeing videos about Chevy and Fords

You mean 10 speed right? I don’t think GM and ford ever had anything to do with 8 speeds together.

Re: I am seeing videos about Chevy and Fords

I have the 10 speed in my '21 1500 Denali. The dealer had it for three months waiting for parts to to repair the transmission. They claim it needed a new valvebody and converter. This was after they had it for several weeks to replace the lifters on one side. I will say it never left me stranded. It shuddered and made some crazy banging noises, but never got me stuck. It is been running and driving perfectly since the repairs. It also has the 6.2 engine which is quite powerful and economical. Having said that, I will be trading it in this fall.
All repairs were done under warranty.

Dang ! thats far from being fare to you and all others who pay the huge price for one of these trucks and it has a problem such as this .. so far ,, I am reading more about the years 2020 - 2024 having this problem and many with the diesel engined trucks being maybe the most to have the problem with the 10 speed transmissions,,

Re: I am seeing videos about Chevy and Fords

Ford had issues in the beginning with the cdf drum sleeve moving which would cause a seal to fail and create harsh shifting problems. It sounds very similar to the issues Chevy is having with the valve body failing in their version of the 10 speed. Only issue I've experience in my 21 F150 so far has been a rare hard downshift at a stop, it sounds/feels like you got rear ended when it slams into 1st. I've only had it happen 3-4 times in the 4.5 years I've driven it.

Re: I am seeing videos about Chevy and Fords

My friend bought a Ford f350 a year or so ago with the 10 speed. We have a transmission guru in Murray that stated, that a lot of the problems with this setup comes because of memory. The 10 speed is bad about setting shift points based on your familiar driving habits. His recomendation was to balance highway and city/country driving. I dont have one nor want one

Some automation is good, for some things. But! smart transmissions?
I prefer adjusting shift points and firmness with my right foot thank you very much!

I've got a 10 speed in my 2019 f150 with almost 90k on it. I bought the truck new and probably have 20k of towing miles on it and never had an issue with the transmission. The tune on the transmission isn't the best but it works. I have several ZF 8 speeds and prefer those over the 10 speed.

.

Right. I prefer doing it all with manual shift and 3 pedals...complete control. Way back in 1999, I purchased a preowned (30k miles) BMW 540i with the automatic. It was a total dog in just about every driving situation until I discovered the previous owner's driving style had been "learned" and the transmission software had "adapted" to it. After I had the dealer reset that to factory default, the car woke up big time.

More modern vehicles have both transmission response and throttle response adaptations. GM trucks have a feature that doesn't connect your throttle pedal movement directly to the butterfly motor but rather interprets it and decides just how much throttle the driver really wanted...likely based on previous behavior observed by the onboard computer.

Reset both and you'll very likely change the feel/spirit of your vehicle.

I can't imagine how GM/Ford would have trouble with this technology especially given that it is over 20 years old.

YMMV,

-Kevin

Personally I prefer adjusting the shift points with my right hand & the firmness with my left foot. Works every time.

All these new trucks are overpriced ****boxes IMO, I'll stick with my 03 Sierra with 6.0/4L80e with 255k miles. I bought it for $8700 in 2010 and it doesn't owe me a damn thing.
