it comes that way because onto everyone uses the stock holes.
Spade bit or router. either one.
I am assuming you are speaking of where the offset washers go

Yes, counter sink holes.

a forstner bit may make the hole with the neatest edges. then drill the offset hole through with a brad point drill for the bolt to go through, both make a nice neat hole and don't tend to wander off center as you drill. of course a drill press with a jig set up would be ideal but not everybody has one.using a predrilled guide for the forstner bit helps

I bought this book the other day and while it isn't what I would call perfect he does somewhat line you out on how to do those insets for the offset washers.

At this time I am not going to suggest that anyone buys the book unless you just flat want for your collection of how to redo Chevy trucks books for the book shelf.

What I would do is:

put the two outside boards in place and mark and drill the holes for the bolts that hold the cross sills in place and the bolt holes for the side boards on the angle strips. You just need the bolts for the angle strips and enough that you feel that the bed will stay square when you move it around at this time.

Set the box on the frame and get it all squared up on the frame exactly as it will be when all is said and done.

using a long (as in 10 inches) 3/8 bolt with a point ground on the end or a length of 3/8 rod with a point ground on one end and a hammer go under the frame and put the bolt/rod up through the holes in the frame and up against the bottom of the wood and using the hammer mark the wood so you have your bolt holes centered exactly where you want them. Now I have to run out and check my frame to make sure that one can actually do that on all holes without issue as it has been a long time since I bolted a bed down on one. I mean making sure that there are no blind holes as I am no sure that there holes in the bottom frame rails at the rear..

Once the holes are marked remove the boards and drill the 3/8 holes and you may want to drill a small pilot hole and drill from the top side.

The as it shows in one of the photos from that book in the photo below set your washer on the board using the bolt though he hole and using a fine point marker or pencil mark the outline of the washer. Have the washers all squared up on the boards exactly as you want them to be when done.

The next step requires a drill press with a depth stop on it as you need to take the Forstner bit but I'll probably use a hole saw and after practicing on some scrap wood set the depth adjustment so the cutter just cuts far enough so the washer sits flush.

Then take a small wood chisel and remove the layer of wood from the circle so the washer will fit flush.

It also helps if you have a buddy or relative who is a master woodworker.

This is some great information and it is coming at the right time for me!

I have been waiting for my wood to dry, it say's on the can 12 to 24 hours,
but I am at 48 hours and three boards are still tacky.

With all the pollen in the air it has been a real challenge keeping it off my wood
any time I open my garage door!

Thanks so much guys,
JDarby
