Decoding ID Plate

Where are the resources to decode all of the paint, trim and option codes for a '66 C20? My ID plate is badly worn as shown in the picture, but of course the codes are stamped and quite legible. I'm trying to find out as much as possible on the original configuration. Thanks to the experts, as always!

Re: Decoding ID Plate

7500 is the GVWR for a 3/4 ton truck; 127 is the wheelbase for a long bed truck (but I assume you're probably more interested in the other codes)

521 is solid white paint (note this is not the ivory paint that was the standard secondary color in a conventional two tone, it's a bright white; standard interior color would have been fawn).

Z62 is the Custom Comfort Option trim code which includes left armrest, right sunshade, chrome cig lighter, full depth foam seat, special insulation, and right door lock.

Being a 66, it should have a SPID, which should also replicate some of this info - do you have a pic perhaps? Would love to see pics of the SPID and the truck.

Hey Jocko... thanks so much for the info! Out of curiosity, where did you find this information? Right now I'm in the middle of making this truck reliable to drive - hope to do a full restoration sometime in the future. I will definitely post some additional pics. Really appreciate your feedback... Rob

Going from my memory since my 65 is still in winter storage (sigh), did the 127 WB equipped with factory overload rear leafs get 7500 as well? Mine is a 1/2 ton.

Hi Keith... when I saw your post I just knew you had helped me in the distant past and yes, threads from 10+ years ago regarding my Squarebody projects. So thank you for still being a great resources and for your input on this thread. Other things in life - mainly airplane projects - took me away from the truck restoration world for a few years. I'm back now to pick things up where I left off with both my '66 and the '76. Your extensive background in the GM universe is sure valuable to guys like me. Thank you, and let's keep it going for another 10 years! --Rob

I dug it out of a 66 truck data book, but it is available in some other resources too, as Keith highlighted. BTW, I did find a pic of your truck over in the Custom Camper Club thread - it's a beauty already, can't wait to see more pics and see it again when its done!

That's a good question Jay, I have to say I'm not certain. My understanding is that the G50 HD springs got you to 5000 GVWR on a C10 and I "think" the G60 aux springs added 500 lbs capacity for each spring.

Chevy1966 was your original question about your 66 Custom Camper or your other 66 C20? Answer is still correct regarding the codes, but I may not have seen a pic of the 66 of yours that you're talking about (I just assumed you were asking about your Custom Camper of course - and becaue it was white like the cc picture :))

Hi Jocko... my question was about my Custom Camper. I'm not sure where you have seen a picture of either of my '66 vehicles - I have not posted any pictures lately but will be doing so in the future as I get a little further into the restoration. Seems like there are not many of the Custom Camper around that haven't been modified or chopped up. I'm going to do my best to make this a good restoration, and the same for my '76 Sierra Classic. Thanks for all of your help.

In that case, here's some additional info about what is included in the Z81 Custom Camper package for reference - was gonna post it earlier then it dawned on my I wasn't sure which of your C20s you were referring to. The pics I saw were indeed from a looong time ago :) I still keep a lookout for 65-66 Custom Campers in case one pops up for sale, but, I agree with you, it seems it's getting hard to find one that hasn't been all hacked up. I'm regretting passing on some of the ones I almost bought over the years. I wish I still had my 66 AND my old 76 Camper Special!! So many projects, so little time :)

EDIT: and I guess the reason I'm adding in the Z81 info (I realize I'm kinda crossing the streams) is because my assumption is that ALL 66 Custom Campers would have the Z62 trim code on the metal tag, since it's an also-included RPO with Z81.

Well shiver me timbers…. I’ve never seen that RPO code for a Custom Camper.. and although I’ve seen the Camper Special and Special Camper SPID terminology on the occasional 66-72 Z81 Custom Camper’s SPID, I’ve never seen the term “Unit” tacked onto it. Very interesting truck - and nicely optioned. Wonder if any other Fremont trucks have this code or matching terminology..?
