Engine pull to install tranny
I'm ordering my Bowtie overdrives TH700 tomorrow. I'm planning on installing it spring break. I'll plan to have it out of comission for a week at my grandpa's shop - it will sit next to a 37 Buick Special & a 58 Chevy Pickup. I take it the easist way to swap the tranny is to take the hood and core support off and pull the engine & tranny through the front of the truck. We have an engine cherry picker. What do I rest the thing on while hooking up the tranny? Should I drain the tranny & the oil before lifting the engine out? Do I install the torque converter on the tranny, then the flexplate, then the engine? Tip on installing the torque converter? I don't want to go in this overwhelmed & clueless.
All of what I'll be installing: TH700 tranny - new tranny lines - new bolts all around - new torque converter - new flexplate - new tranny cooler & lines - new u-joints - rebuilt electronic carb - new starter. Enough to do in a week? |
I dont see a need to pull the engine and transmission, unless you wanted to detail the engine bay or clean up the engine.

Yeah unless your detailing the bay, just leave it.
If your set on removing something; An easier route would be pull entire front clip as a whole, then you have excellent room to work. 8 or 10 (+/-) bolts to pull the front clip. easier than just the radiator support. I put a new tranny in mine without touching the engine (all by myself).
Just make shure you have two good jackstands to hold the front end stable and a floor jack to lift the tranny up. |
No need to pull the engine. One of these makes is pretty easy to do, and they occasionally put them on sale for about $40.

Tyler, all you need is a tranny jack. Although, if you wanna pull the engine, all you gotta do is take off your hood, you can leave the core support on.

Front Clip Removal
Nvbowtie, I want to pull my front clip as an assembly. You mention the 8 or 10 bolts (+/-)...where are they and how do you go about doing this?

The torque converter goes on the tranny input shaft. Slide it on as far as you can (you can bolt a strap to one of the transmission bellhousing bolt holes to keep it from sliding off while you are manuevering the tranny about).
The flexplate bolts to the crankshaft flange, using the grade 8 bolts and lockwashers. Use a torque wrench and maybe some loctite...you don't want this coming loose! Then, when you go to join the tranny to the engine, bolt up the bellhousing first, then align the flexplate/torque converter bolt holes. Slide the nub on the torque converter into the recess at the back of the crank flange and use the grade 8 bolts and lockwashers to bolt the flexplate to the tranny...again, use the torque wrench and loctite. Much of the oil in the tranny is in the torque converter...there's an unbelievable amount of oil in there! Of course you should drain the oil in the old tranny to keep from making a mess, but unless you have a drain plug in the torque converter you won't be able to drain it completely. Be careful...it's heavy and will slide off the input shaft when you separate the the engine/tranny. Your best resource is Bowtie Overdrives...ask them any questions you have before the sale. |

Why pull the engine? I pulled the manual tranny out and installed a TH-400 auto, alone without pulling the engine.

if you pull the engine or not, here's an excellent tip for installing the trans to it. take a pair of bolts(same thread as the belhousing bolts, 3/8-16 if i remember correctly) about 5" long, and cut the heads off of them, leaving you with a 5" stud. now bevel the edges of the stud a little on the end you just cut the head off of. you can cut a slot in it, for a screwdriver if you like. now thread them into the belhousing bolt holes before attempting to install the trans.once you get it lined up, put the other 4 bolts in, then remove your studs, and install the remaining 2 bolts. makes lining the engine and trans up 100x easier.

I've got a 2004r from BTO. Their instructions are very complete. Follow them to tht T and it'll work out very well. Kind of a pain in the butt doing all their checks but you cannot blame them for not being thorough.
