speedo cable

I am going to pull the speedo gear in my transfer case I have a np203. Do I just screw it out after I remove the cable? Is there and transfer case oil up there to leak out?

When I bought my 82 the cable was dissconnected at the transfer case. All they did was seal the cable end and the fitting with baggies and rubber bands.
