I've used it on chassis and engines with no "eating" issues on either.

I also use GUNK engine brite too, works good and cheap, but not near as aggresive as Oven Cleaner is.

Make sure to thoroughly regrease any suspension stuff with lots of new grease to flush out any residual cleaner that may have worked it's way into the part.
