Jeff the "carrier" is what you ring gear is bolted to. What they are reffering to is there were different series or sizes of carriers made. They were designed for higher ring gears (3.08 to 3.73) and lower ring gears (3.73 to 4.56) because of the "physical" size of the ring gear....
