I was just at a engine rebuilding shop asking about an refurbished engine for my 86 c-10, it has the 305. They told me it would be more expensive since it was a hybrid year, going for the carberated to injection system, something does not sound right, I thought a 305 after 83 was the same block. I've done business with them before and they are pretty reliable shop but this doesn't sound right.
