In Calif ,the tax will varie by County/ City .LA 8.25%
Usually when you buy a used vehicle from a private party , the buyer will pay sales tax when they register the vehicle .So if you just take it home and register it their you only pay what you would at home .
If you buy the vehicle at a Used or New car lot they will collect the sales tax.
