Unless you completely dissassemble th box, getting the grease out will be almost impossible. Removing the cap is ok to do, no springs!

I would suggest removing two of the four cover bolts, (one diagonally from the other). Using a grease gun with a tapered rubber tip, purge the box by pumping into one hole and letting the grease come out the other hole.
