i have a dana 60, 8 lug, and i don't have to pull the axles to get the drums off...
take the wheel off, undo the 2 screws in the face of the drum and slide that puppy off, if your brakes are really wacked you might have to turn the adjuster to get the shoes from holding the drum, but it should pretty much slide right off...
