I just got done shoehorning a 4L60E and L31 (5.7L Vortec) into my 71 C20.
The stock X-member works fine, but has to be moved rearward, but there are holes pre-drilled in the chassis by the factory that line up PERFECTLY. The only modification I did was to drill one new hole in the X-member to accomodate the 4L60s single stud mount, and I had to shorten the linkage a bit (the 4L must be about 1/4" wider at the shifter arm).
