If you remember your physics classes back in hi school or college you'll recall Pascal's law which states P=F/A where P is pressure, F is force and A is cross-sectional area the force acts on. A = the volume of fluid. Disc brakes (calipers) have a larger volume than the volume of the rear wheel cylinders, hence the larger brake line. I hope this helps.
