what you have been told is incorrect. swapping a 73-80 clip onto an 81-87 truck is gravy. take the wiper mechanism from the 73-80 truck (you obviously have that) and swap it into the 81-87. bolt your 73-80 front clip to it. all of the bolts line up. the only major difference is the wiper mech, and the 81-87s have the hood hinges recessed into the cowl.

you can do the opposite 81-87 clip on a 73-80 cab by swapping wiper mechs and adding slots for the hinges.

everything else is a direct bolt in. even your dash pad will fit the 81+ dash.

i sold it to him for $150 with a bunch of extra parts, so i'd imagine the price is pretty reasonable. an hour drive, and i can only imagine the $ savings from buying an entire truck, plus the saved gas money just might make it worth your while.
