Did you leave the transfer case in place? I've done it two times but each time I have had the transfer case and transmission out so I put them in connected. A helper would be very useful as it is very difficult to get it lined up correctly.
When I did the K20 it didn't have a body on so that was fairly simple.
With the K5 I pulled the driver seat out and the tranny hump cover. Then I put the tranny/transfer case under the vehicle and used my engine hoist coming through the driver side door to attach to the tranny through the tranny hump hole. Once I got the tranny/transfercase to about the right height I used the floor jack to help level the setup. Still a bear of a project but a little easier.
