If you go to the hardware store you should be able to buy a plastic hose adapter fitting or a hose mending fitting that fits 5/8" hose. That will allow you to hook onto a heater hose. I also use a shut-off valve so I can easily control the flow. If you put full pressure in the system, you can blow out the heater core, which is designed for 17 psi, household water usually runs 40-60 psi. This is also a good time for a new thermostat.
