The tach are electrical utilizing magnatism. They are somewhat protected by a cardboard round cover over the mechanism. Sometimes they pick up all sorts of dirt, dust and other crap in there that makes them stick. Sometimes they just stick. I bought 3 tach dash's at Carlisle, Pa a few years ago at an average cost of $125. each. Not one of them worked! An old tach dash is only a good deal if the tach works. You can get a reproduction tach from most aftermarket dealers like Christians or Mothertruckers -- for around $100. You can also send yours off to one of many repair shops listed in Hemmings but it will probably cost more to repair then a repo. By the way, even when new they were not very accurate and with HEI ignition, ther are even less accurate. If you want, you can send it up to me and I will take a look at it to see if it's something simple---just cover my return shipping---Huck
