I kinda figured it was a press that did this. Even so, I tried using a shop press, vice grips, even a hammer.
Yeah, i still need a cable.

I thought I hit the jack pot in the junk yard, I found a later model speedo cable, with a plastic end cap on the cable. it looked like it was placed on a predetermined cut to length cable. I grabbed this, and figured i could simply pop the end off of the cable, cut to the length I needed, and glue it back on.
Nope. That didn't work either.
