There is a small metal part (like a square plate...but small) that has a hole in it to guide the button in a straight line in and out, and it holds the pressure on the spring so the button pops back out at you. That tab will break off if the inside is rusted a little. Held in place by little bent metal tabs. Usually just easier to replace the handle. I see plenty of owners poking their fingers through the hole to open the door!!!
