Stock 292 crank snout HB bolt is 7/16 -20 UNF x 1" deepthread. Total bolt length is 2-1/2" long. Leo Santucci recommends a 1/2 -20 UNF x 1" deep minimum thread. Except for the shorter lengths these are the same relative sizes for the SBC and BBC HB bolts. The 1/4" thick washer is the same.
Using the special tool is the only way to go. I got a new one from Eastwood for under $40. You might be able to rent (borrow) one from an auto parts store, but they don't always have all the pieces in the box later on down the line.
Good luck and use lots of clean motor oil.
