ok, finally got the snap ring out, it involved a small drill bit cutting a notch in the ring, so I could use a punch to do drive the gap together.....then bending a craftsmen screwdriver pretty badly to pull it out.

On to the next problem, I can't get that stamped metal lock ring off the stub shaft, I tried to use channel locks and a punch, but that too didn't work, is there a special tool to get this off that I am missing?
Also, any pics of the special tool to install the steel balls would be appreciated....i took that portion of the box out inside of a plastic tub, so none of them got away from me.....do I need to fill that piston with a thick grease to hold the balls in place?
