Palf, it is in fact for safety.
When the old style motor mounts break 9which they were prone to do) then the engine would lean to the passengerside, and where ever the throttle was at the moment the mount snapped, that is where it stayed for a moment. Since they normally break when you take off, the throttle would be stuck down a bit further than you woulda have wanted.
There was a recall for the motor mounts, and the throttle cable upgrade was done a couple years prior.

I agree with you on the better responce of the rod. To make this even better you can use sperical ends (heim joints) on the ends of the rod.
