It's not really a bend in the cat, it's to keep the frame from getting brittle and cracking/breaking from the heat cycling from being that close to the cat. The cats they were using when these trucks were built were the huge pellet type (most of which are long gone I'm sure...) and they didn't have much room to work with even when they did bend the frames. My Gentleman Jim even has that bend and it's a 75.
