As for the tranny in your buddy's truck, the 83 may have a lock up converter in it. If it does, you'll need to either wire it up to use it, or get rid of it. Running a lock up converter with out the lock up feature will cause LOTS of extra heat and slowly kill the tranny.
Also, the van will probably have a long shaft tranny where the truck would have a short shaft if original...drive shaft mods will be needed.
